With the first half of President Donald Trump’s presidential term coming to a close, it brings the start of the midterm elections. These elections determine which party controls the House of Representatives and can speed or slow down the president’s pace for plans for the U.S., and also determine many positions for federal officials across the nation.
However, after Trump’s heavily controversial first half, the question is which party has the highest chances of taking over the House?
Lots of prominent events occurred within the first half of the presidential term, such as the Iran War conflicts, tariffs, ICE controversies, and more. With all of these occurrences stacking up, it caused a loss of faith within voters, as shown with Trump’s approval rating being at 38% according to BBC and CNN. With congressional approval of most of these events, voters (particularly the younger generation) are trying to flip the House to slow the president’s influence. And with the looks of it now, it seems as if the Democrats have the initial ballot to retake the chamber.
With the evident dissatisfaction that looms over many of Trump’s primary voters in the 2024 election, it seems that the tide will turn upon Congress, and Trump’s momentum will come to a slower pace after the midterms, and he will likely face the risk of undergoing a 3rd impeachment if the House flips due to his fairly controversial decisions. The midterm election is definitely going to be an obstacle for Congress members as well as Trump.
“The longer the Iran War stretches on, and the longer it disrupts the global economy and pushes consumer prices up, the greater the risk may be,” Anthony Zurcher, BBC reporter said.
Now with the candidates: for the senate in Texas is current Sen. John Cornyn who has held his position since 2002. Cornyn will face two Republican candidates Attorney General Ken Paxton, and Representative Wesley Hunt. And from the Democratic race Colin Allred who has recently withdrawn. This leaves frontrunners Jasmine Crockett and James Talarico going for the Texas senate. As well as prominent candidates in the running for Representative of District 6 in Texas, or Dallas, are Jake Ellzey, James Buford and Cliff Wiley with projected winner Jake Ellezey according to NBC.
With only seven months away from midterms, Congress and Trump’s actions these next few months could determine the outcome of the election this November. Unless the dynamic within the government changes that led original voters to turn on Congress, Trump could potentially lose the House, roping him into an unpredictable second half of his term.
