Once dominated by dystopian stories and simple romance subplots, Young Adult (YA) has drastically changed over the past few years. Many modern YA novels feature heavier romance and stronger language, and oftentimes the only thing that keeps them classified as “YA” is that the characters are in high school. Much of this change can be traced back to BookTok; a community on TikTok where users share book recommendations and reviews. Books that gain popularity on the app often continue to trend beyond the platform. Lately, BookTok has been a major influence in shaping young adult novels.
The main issue with BookTok is how it is starting to blur the line between young adult and new adult. Teen readers need to know that YA and NA are very different genres. However, the advertisements of BookTok don’t clearly define the differences between YA and NA.
Many books considered “young adult” often feature darker themes that are not suitable for younger readers. Due to this shift, Young Adult literature has changed in many ways. A few years back, the YA genre was defined by books like “The Hunger Games”, “The Maze Runner”, and “Divergent”. These days, books like the “Boys of Tommen” series and “A Court of Thorns and Roses” are classified as young adult. You don’t have to look hard to see clear differences in these books.
Older YA books were much more focused on plot and world building. They included themes of survival and rebellion, identity, and good v. evil. Romance existed, but it never overtook the plot. It was often used to move along the overarching plot. Swearing and profanity was also kept to a minimum. Newer young adult books are often focused on emotional trauma and relationship drama. They also include much stronger language. It is not rare to see swearing on every page. These differences highlight just how much the young adult genre has changed in the past few years.
What’s truly shocking is how there aren’t clear guidelines in books. Most people would agree that the YA book genre fits the PG-13 movie rating. In PG-13 movies, there are certain restrictions to how often the characters can cuss and how severely. Yet, there is none of that in books. For 12-17 year olds, constantly reading profanity and adult themes can influence behavior. Parents should carefully consider what younger readers are being exposed to.
BookTok has undeniably changed YA literature. It easily influences which books become popular, and not for the better. It glorifies “Young Adult” books with mature themes, romance, and cursing. In a few years, Young Adult novels are going to be nothing like what we are familiar with now.
