New Year’s resolutions have always been a way for people to set goals and accomplishments they want to complete for the upcoming year. Whether people want to better their life, their habits, or their future, resolutions are meant to be a stepping stone to keep you motivated in completing these goals in the new year. Although people of all ages set New Year resolutions, students in high school tend to plan resolutions with a different outlook than others. One that is shaped by their school life, friends, activities and future.
Kanishka Srinivasan, a sophomore at LT, states that her resolutions mostly fall under the categories of health and sometimes academics.
“This year my goal is to eat healthier and sleep sooner,” Srinivasan said.
Srinivasan also said that while she was able to accomplish some of her goals last year, there were also some that didn’t last.
“Last year, my goal was to read more, and I actually managed to follow through with that. But I didn’t follow through with the academic one, which died in like a month,” Srinivasan said.
Trisha Kumar, a senior at LT, shares that she is sometimes inconsistent with her resolutions.
“I follow most of my resolutions but there are some I don’t do at all,” said Kumar.
For this year, Kumar hopes to improve her overall lifestyle.
“This year I want to build a better productive routine and do more fulfilling things, [I want to] get more hobbies and just do things I usually wouldn’t do,” Kumar said.
Kumar shares a piece of advice for those planning new year resolutions.
“I think people place too many unrealistic resolutions then they don’t actually do it, they give up, and you shouldn’t give up. Just set things you think you would actually be able to do,” Kumar said.
Overall, high school students mostly focus on setting goals to improve their lifestyle and academics. Consistency is one factor that remains difficult to follow through among high schoolers, with many starting off motivated but slowly losing interest as the year continues. For future resolutions, students should learn to stay persistent in the face of adversity.
